Finding Freedom: Escaping the grind of workaholism.
“It is your own work in life that is the ultimate seduction” - Pablo Picasso
Lately, I’ve been working a lot. But it’s only because I love what I do! I’m putting the final touches on my latest retreat and getting my business seen on social media. There is the never-ending to-do list and it’s always go, go, go. But it got me wondering, am I addicted to work? I suppose if I’m asking myself that question I may already know the answer.
In a very Western world where productivity often takes a back seat over personal well-being, I lately found myself trapped in that dichotomy. Teaching balance between rest and productivity, I find I am a student always learning these lessons too.
So how do we find balance and gain control of a very necessary thing - leisure time?
Here are a few things that may help.
1. Set Boundaries:
Establish clear boundaries between work and leisure. Define specific work hours and stick to them. I purposely plan outings with my family so I can put away the work and spend time with the people I love.
Create a designated workspace to help separate work from your personal life. I am lucky enough to have a private yoga studio separate from my home.
2. Prioritize Self-Care:
Schedule regular self-care activities, whether it's meditation, exercise, or simply taking time to relax. I walk to work every day and it’s a great way to start my morning.
Practice mindfulness to stay present and reduce stress. I practice mindfulness each day in my daily meditation practice.
3. Learn to Say No:
It's okay to decline additional work or commitments when you feel overwhelmed. I am a cancel queen! Plans are, well, made to be broken sometimes. I never over-commit.
Saying no is a powerful way to protect your leisure time. I also say no to planning out too far in advance so I have that time to do nothing.
4. Plan Non-Work Activities:
Schedule activities on your calendar, just as you would work tasks. I have a dance class on my calendar each week to look forward to. I make time to take it - especially if it’s actually on my calendar!
Explore hobbies and interests that bring you joy and relaxation. My local library has craft nights that I love. They are once a month so it’s not too crazy for my schedule.
5. Reflect and Adjust:
Periodically assess your work-life balance. Are you spending enough time on leisure activities that rejuvenate you? This is that very question from the beginning of my blog and the big reason why you’re reading this.
Be willing to adjust your schedule and priorities as needed to maintain balance. Every Sunday night I look over my calendar for the week and see what is a priority and what can be shifted.
Finding Freedom in Balance
As we navigate the intricate dance between work and leisure, let's remember that true success is not measured solely by our outward work goals but also by the successes of our personal lives. Balance is the key to unlocking the freedom to enjoy both the satisfaction of our work and the beauty of our leisure time.
Try some of these practical tips like setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and planning non-work activities, you can find harmony and regain control of your leisure time.
Balance is not a destination; it's a journey. Embrace it, and let it lead you to a life where both work and leisure coexist in harmony, just as in Picasso's seductive work in life.
