Why Three Hours of Silence Can Change Your Life Forever

Fourteen years ago, I joined a 5- day silent retreat that profoundly redefined my understanding of silence. Silence, often feared for its intimidating emptiness, became my sanctuary, and my greatest teacher. It was during the stillness that I found the courage to face the deepest parts of myself, the parts that held the pain, the fear, and the hope. It was during a five-day silent retreat that I truly learned to hear my innermost self. And you know what happened? Many things.

The Gift of Silence: A Five-Day Retreat

On the retreat, I learned that silence is not merely the absence of speaking but a very deliberate choice to turn inwards. For five days, I refrained from interacting with others. I didn't speak, make eye contact, or even gesture. I didn't write, read, or draw. Instead, I embraced the silence as a golden opportunity to go within, to really go within.

In the silence, I discovered layers of myself that I had never known existed. The constant chatter of my mind began to quiet, and in its place, I found more of myself that I didn't know was there. This stillness allowed me to listen deeply to my own heart, to hear the whispers of my soul. It was in this space that my true healing began, where I found clarity and an awareness of self I had never felt before.

Embracing Silence in Our Practice

While we won't be engaging in a five-day silent practice in Scotland, I will invite the participants to experience a taste of this with a three-hour silent practice. This practice will serve as an introduction to the what it means to dwell in silence, guiding them towards a deeper connection with their inner self.

In these three hours, we will choose to turn inwards, to disengage from the distractions of the external world. This means no talking, no eye contact, no gestures. We will refrain from writing, reading, and drawing, being on any kind of device, allowing ourselves to fully immerse completely. This is not just an absence of just noise; it is a sacred space where we can actually hear ourselves. Maybe for some - for the first time ever.

The Power of Turning Inwards

In choosing silence, we are making a conscious decision to go within. This inward journey is an opportunity to connect with our true essence, to listen to the wisdom that resides within us. It is a time to honor our experiences, to process our emotions, and to find peace in the stillness.

During our three-hour practice, you may encounter resistance, discomfort, or even fear. These are natural responses to the unfamiliar territory of silence. But it is through facing these challenges that we find growth and transformation. Embrace the discomfort, lean into the stillness, and allow yourself to be present with whatever arises.

Conclusion

Silence is a powerful ally in our restorative journey. It invites us to slow down, to listen deeply, and to connect with our true essence. In the stillness, we find healing, clarity, and a renewed sense of purpose. And ultimately, we realize, "I'm Ok. I'm really Ok."
